Word puzzle games: practice with spoiler-free hints

Quick answer

Word puzzle games can ask you to infer a word from a clue, transform one word into another, or group words by a shared meaning. This page has an original 16-word grouping exercise and a short word ladder, each with optional help. It teaches a spoiler-free approach rather than providing today’s NYT Connections answers.

How do you ask for a hint without spoiling the answer?

For a grouping puzzle, explain the connection before committing to a set. “These are related” is weaker than a rule that applies to all four. If five words seem to fit, test narrower definitions rather than discarding the extra word at random.

  1. First ask for a method: should you look at meaning, spelling, sound or word combinations?
  2. Next ask for one category direction, without naming its members.
  3. If needed, ask whether a specific proposed group follows a precise rule.
  4. Only request the complete answer when you are ready to stop solving.

An original 16-word grouping puzzle

Divide the words below into four groups of four. Every word is used once. Work on paper or hold your candidate groups in mind; this practice sheet has no submission counter.

  • MARS
  • VIOLIN
  • BASIL
  • CUBE
  • VENUS
  • SPHERE
  • DRUM
  • MINT
  • CYLINDER
  • FLUTE
  • NEPTUNE
  • SAGE
  • GUITAR
  • CONE
  • THYME
  • SATURN
Hint 1: one broad direction

One group contains things used to make music. Find four words that fit the same definition.

Hint 2: the four category names

Look for planets, musical instruments, herbs and three-dimensional shapes.

Reveal all four groups

Planets: MARS, VENUS, NEPTUNE, SATURN.

Musical instruments: VIOLIN, DRUM, FLUTE, GUITAR.

Herbs: BASIL, MINT, SAGE, THYME.

Three-dimensional shapes: CUBE, SPHERE, CYLINDER, CONE.

Each word belongs to one of these four definitions. The completed partition uses all sixteen words exactly once.

A short word ladder: COLD to WARM

Change exactly one letter per step, keeping a common English word at every step. Do not add, remove or rearrange letters. Try to reach WARM from COLD in four changes.

Find the four changes

COLD → ____ → ____ → ____ → WARM

Show a small hint

The first change can turn something chilly into a length of string.

Reveal the answer and explanation

COLD → CORD → CARD → WARD → WARM. Each neighboring pair differs in one position. This gives a valid four-change route; the task is to find a route, not to prove uniqueness.

For a spoiler-light approach to any current board, use the hint ladder above and ask about only one connection at a time.

Common questions
