How to play
Codebreaker

Use each guess to test a specific possibility. Keep all previous feedback in play; a new theory must explain the old rows too.

Your first round

  1. Begin on Easy and submit three different available symbols.
  2. Use Exact plus Misplaced to learn how many of those symbols occur in the secret.
  3. Change positions or replace a symbol to test a clear hypothesis, then submit another complete guess.
  4. Before each later guess, compare it against every earlier row and reject contradictions.

Worked example

Make the idea concrete

Interpret the whole row

Suppose a three-symbol secret is A, B, C and you guess A, C, D. The feedback is 1 exact and 1 misplaced: A is in place, C belongs elsewhere, and D is absent. In actual play you see only the counts, so you must deduce which symbols caused them.

Build your strategy

  • A row with zero exact and zero misplaced eliminates every symbol in that row from the secret.
  • On Easy, three total matches means the right symbols are present and only their ordering remains.
  • On repeat-enabled tiers, distinguish evidence about a symbol’s presence from evidence about how many copies it has.

Common mistakes

  • Reading the feedback counts as position-by-position markers.
  • Making a new guess that cannot produce the feedback already recorded for an earlier row.

Try this next

On Easy, write a short reason for each replacement or rearrangement. Move to Medium when you can track both symbol membership and position.
